Virginia is expected to have an increasing shortage of nurses through 2015. Registered nurses earn on average from $62,000 to $72,000 in the larger cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Richmond, and Arlington.

The top hospital employers in the state are Heart & Vascular Institute in Winchester with over 20,000 employees. VCU Health Systems, Inova Fairfax Children Hospital, Medical College Virginia Hospital, University of Virginia Neurological and UVA Health Systems are all larger hospitals with between 5,000 to 7,000 employees.
